Visual Spectacle

Welfare State International worked with a large variety of artists to create highly visual shows for a given site. Often the shows were installation or sculptural based. Common creations for the company included processional images, flags, large puppets, lanterns, shadow puppets, multi-media presentations and expressionist costumes. Many of these creative techniques are documented in Engineers of the Imagination (1983).

Welfare State International’s events were unique and characteristic of the community of makers creating the event.  However, John Fox’s distinctive visual style were apparent throughout, as can be seen in these images from his personal sketch books.
