  Max Stafford-Clark studied at Trinity College , Dublin where he began directing theatre. He became an associate director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 1966 and two years later the Artistic Director of the company. In 1970 he moved to run the Traverse Theatre Workshop Company, designed to create a space to explore approaches to new writing through more open-ended developmental methods.
