The only original Belt and Braces play to have been published, it follows the experience of an Irish spot-welder arriving in Britain to experience strikes, prison and a political education. Belt and Braces were one of the most prominent political theatre companies of the 1970s and 80s touring with their Roadshow and band in new plays on issues from old age to the Troubles in Ireland (Eileen Pollock’s Not So Green As It’s Cabbage, along with other George Farquhar and Brecht, many of them written by Gavin Richards and playing (controversially) in the West End in their successful productions of Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay.
