Her Inside: Women in the Lockdown

Her Inside is a project that grew out of the Unfinished Histories zoom playreading series set up in April 2020.

It created a blog where women and non-binary people could share responses to the lockdown, creative writing including short plays, poems, stories, reflections, as well as songs, drawings and other art works. Many of the early responses came from women who had been part of the alternative theatre movement including Beth Porter, Jo Stanley, Jill Greenhalgh, Claire MacDonald,  Sue Gill, Jacqueline Saphra (aka Jacqui Shapiro) and Helen Chadwick and we also republished April De Angelis’s 1986 play Breathless, along with other earlier pieces (many of the 19th and early 20th century), which resonated with the experience of lockdown and social confinement.

A small grant from Local Connections Fund in March 2021 enabled the development of writing workshops and public performances of the work on zoom and later in-person.

In November 2021, with a new small grant from LCF, a new phase is being launched: Her Inside: Stepping Outside with the opportunity to work one-to-one on writings, a call for further work including material addressing the experience of moving outside the confined domestic space – and its dilemmas, and a further performance.
